Recorded by Tom Krüger in Albstadt on 20./21. April 1999

Melodies of `98 is the title of the new CD recorded by the Rainer Tempel Big Band. It also stands for the idea of Tempel`s composing: Based on a strong groove set up from the five piece rhythm section he develops melodies and colours in which he weaves parts for improvisations.

Always sticking to this idea the 8 compositions on the CD shows a wide range of different styles in which the listener might recognize the influence of composers like Jim Beard, Vince Mendoza and Bob Brookmeyer.

Tempel`s orchestra was founded three and a half years ago and has developed to one of the most unconventional bands of the German jazz scene. Working with young professional musicians Tempel tries to be a voice of its own within modern composed music. He combines classical European elements with rhythm of Rockmusic and puts them in the classic 17 piece Big Band set-up.

Tempel was born in 1971, studied jazz piano in Nuremberg and composition in Cologne. He is currently working for orchestras all over Germany such as the Radio Big Bands of NDR Hamburg and Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt.
